In the "First Steps" section, we address the first people to notify. The initial calls are generally to:
As a notification reminder - many of these people should be also be informed of the arrangements for the funeral and memorial service(s).
You will also want to notify the deceased's employer, any organization where they may have volunteered, and any clubs where they were members.
If there was a caregiver or other domestic staff, they will want to have the opportunity to say farewell to the deceased.
In many cases, the publishing of the obituary in the local news outlets will suffice, but you will want to be sure that this is communicated to as many contacts as appropriate.
In some cultures, cards are sent notifying people of a person's passing and the details of their memorial service.
Another Reminder - The Police
In the "First Steps" section, we also mentioned that you should notify the police and surrounding neighbors of the death.
Again, we emphasize that these preventative actions are the first line of defense against burglary and robbery while everyone is away from the home.
While electronic devices certainly help, the family may not be in a position to communicate by phone in the middle of a memorial service.
The police will usually drive by more frequently. Neighbors will look across the yard more often. Possibly several neighbors will offer to stay at the house while the family attends the funeral and memorial service(s).
Check back with some of the first calls you made. Did you miss anyone? Never get ahold of someone? This is a change chance to get to that next round of people.
