However, when Carolyn brought When I Leave You to my attention, I realized the importance of having all this information in one place.
At the time, I was recently divorced and living near my only sister. None of my best friends lived nearby, and no one had a clue about my thoughts on death.. Also, no one had access to my personal information nor were they familiar with my freelance business. An eye-opener for me!
As I gradually told people about UnexpectedPassing.com, everyone offered another personal story - several of which populate different sections of this site.
The constant TV news on opioid addiction reminded me that death could come at any time, impacting people of all ages.
I wanted to share information the basic, but necessary, steps and details.
Dealing with death is emotional. It affects everyone differently, but ultimately, it is about the loved one who passed and the ability of those living to find a way to move forward.
My career spans international banking and investment management, but now I am a freelance writer, mostly connected to alternative investments and financial services. I am driven by curiosity from my year as an exchange student in Brazil, where I learned
about different cultures, different religions, and different perspectives on life events.
Our friendship has lasted more than 30 years, through personal changes, international assignments, and the joys of aging - and trying to do that gracefully.
Contrary to what you might think from our work on this website, neither of us dresses in black all the time, nor do we sleep in coffins!
Neither are we involved in the funeral business in any way, shape, or form!
As the daughter of two educators, and the mother of another, I guess I should not be surprised at my desire to share learning.
By way of career, I was in banking for almost 40 years, and even then, was involved throughout my various roles in training and mentoring new team members.

By way of career, I was in banking for almost 40 years, and even then, was involved throughout my various roles in training and mentoring new team members.
My voyage toward this website began in 2016, when a dear college friend passed unexpectedly, and I had agreed to be her Executrix.
While she had provided a lot of basic information, there were gaps that I needed to address quickly and long distance.
I was on a consulting assignment in Aruba when she passed in Schenectady, NY. That experience led to the creation of the form When I Leave You, a preplanning tool I wanted to share with everyone.
Many friends have given input and feedback, and I thank them for their time and ideas.
I am now retired and use part of my time to give back to those that need additional help - mentoring legal immigrants to ready them for careers in the US in their chosen field and tutoring adults for the HiSET.
I also indulge in my personal love of needlework (handled down from both of my grandmothers) and meet with a group weekly to practice the needle arts.
Living near Nashville, Tennessee, I am a mother, spouse, sister, and daughter, and am very well trained by our three cats.
